Weekly Awesome: Drama of the MARPs

On November 28th 2015, The Townside High School Malaria Volunteer Club, located in Mbale, distributed 100 bed nets to the village of Gangama, located just outside Mbale. The event took place at Our Lady of Fatima and St. Jude Dispensary, also located in Gangama. The students opened the day with a drama about the Most At Risk Populations (MARPs) and a percussion ensemble created using the different methods of prevention. Students used machetes, cups, buckets, and mosquito nets to make music and demonstrate the dangers of sleeping without a bed net.

In conjunction with the VHTs at this Health Center 2, the students then led stations and quizzed recipients on proper bed net care. One station allowed participants to practice bed net repair, another demonstrated proper washing, and a third showed proper hanging and transformation from a square net to a circle net. Participants were then sent to a distribution table where students and VHTs quizzed them on what they had learned. If they answered incorrectly, they were sent to the specific station to correct their mistake.
