Day 9: Technology Tools, SMS Reporting, Social Media Guidelines, Value Proposition, and Vaccines

Volunteers and Staff are still going strong in the last full day of Malaria Boot Camp IV. Cameroon PCRV Jesse Casanova started off the morning with a resourceful presentation about technology tools. Jesse introduced a couple open source tools such as CrowdMap and OpenStreetMap and explained how PCVs could use them to organize, track, and analyze data in their communities.

Chris Ruli, BCIVAfterwards, Senegal PCV Chris Ruli explained how his partner NGO, PATH/MACEPA, is utilizing SMS technology to collect, report, organize, and analyze malaria statistics from the 22 health posts in Senegal. Jillian Husman, Stomp Communications Manager, followed Chris with a presentation and discussion about Stomp’s Social Media Guidelines.

Before breaking for lunch, a Malaria Team Members from seven different countries Skyped-in to share their experiences during the first few months at post and to offer advice to the new members of the Malaria Team.

In the afternoon, Stomp Project Coordinator, Chris Hedrick, Skyped-in to present about the value proposition that Peace Corps Volunteers have to offer. Chris challenged participants to demonstrate how Peace Corps is a valuable and unique partner in public health and international development.

Sally Ethelston of PATH Malaria Vaccine Initiative closed the day with an intriguing session about the history and development of a malaria vaccine. Participants had the opportunity to ask the expert questions about the trail and its cost, efficacy, community perception, and potential coverage of a future vaccine.
